Colour photograph showing a rear elevation of the Civic Theatre, formerly the Hippodrome and Palace Theatre, in Darlington. Taken from across Borough Road, it shows a plain brick structure with light brick dressings. The rear wall dominates the right hand side of the photograph, with the sidewall visible to the left. The two walls are connected by a bastion-like corner tower. A glazed canopy covers the entrance at the base of the sidewall and there is a large arched window above. The building houses a gallery and a bar and is an addition to the red brick original, the sidewall of which can be seen in the background to the left. This sidewall has three main bays, the centre of which is advanced and contains the name ‘Hippodrome’. An iron canopy can be seen covering the far corner of the building.
