Dacorum Pavilion
The Pavilion was built in 1966 as part of the Civic Centre complex, away from the old town, to serve the expanding population whilst preserving the interest of the original buildings. Built of Portland stone, the building was set within lawns and gardens overlooking the river at the rear. The main hall was at first floor level, the ground floor being devoted to a small hall and entrance foyer. An open-plan staircase led from the foyer to the main hall, in front of the windows which exposed the stairs and a huge mural behind by Fred Millet depicting a spectrum of entertainment. This was particularly well seen at night through the large glazed elevation. The other dominant architectural feature was the auditorium ceiling composed of fibreglass domes which appeared to float over high-level arched windows. The stage was a large concert platform built to accommodate full orchestral concerts, but by the use of permanent folding side-screens could be reduced to form a 28ft "pros" for plays and revues. Retractable seating was used in the stalls area, allowing multi-purpose use. At this level was the Culpin room, seating 200, with modern stalactite ceiling and 35ft window overlooking the Pavilion lawn. A spiral-design staircase connected the main level to the gallery, 25ft long bar and restaurant/dining area. There was another long bar at the top of the foyer. Dressing room accommodation was to be found at the rear, as well as get-in. There were no flying facilities. Dacorum Pavilion closed its doors for the last time on the 30 June 2002 and was demolished shortly after. Subsequently there have been many public campaigns to restore a cultural venue on the site.
