Colour photograph showing the façade of the Hippodrome in Colchester. Taken from across the road, it shows a busy, Edwardian Baroque façade of three storeys in red brick with ample stone dressings. It has three main bays in an asymmetrical design with a centrepiece surmounted by a curved pediment bearing the name ‘Grand Theatre’ in the tympanum, above three blind oeil-de-boeuf openings. There are three windows to each of the first and second floors of these central bays, divided by pilasters. The outer bays, although of broadly similar design, are of unequal width - the bay to the right being a squashed-up version of that to the left. The name ‘Hippodrome’ appears on top of a canopy that extends the width of the building.
