Colour photograph showing the auditorium of the former Playhouse Theatre in Colchester. Taken from a gallery behind the balcony, it shows a deep stage framed by a plain and square proscenium with a slightly fluted cove moulding and a small coat-of-arms at the centre within a decorative frieze. Either side of the stage at balcony level is a round-headed box that looks almost directly into the auditorium, decorated on their fronts with matching wreath medallions and anthemion ornaments. The curved balcony itself dominates the foreground and the ceiling is in shot above. The former theatre is in use as a bingo hall.
