Auditorium of the New Theatre, Cardiff

Colour photograph showing the auditorium of the New Theatre in Cardiff. Taken from the stage right end of the dress circle, it shows four stage left boxes with the stage and proscenium to the left and the dress circle and upper circle slips to the right. The rectangular proscenium has no frame as such, being contained by the two bays of side boxes in two tiers, which are set between fluted giant Ionic columns rising from tall pedestals, with a straight entablature over. The box fronts themselves (the upper ones iron-balustraded) have an interesting undulating, rather than simply bowed form. The auditorium is decorated with restrained ornamental plasterwork throughout.
