Colour photograph showing the auditorium of the Theatre Royal in Chatham. Taken from the stage, it shows a largely gutted auditorium with the dress circle, upper circle and ceiling all visible. The ceiling is ornately decorated, containing a circular feature, partly in shot, with a central dome. The balcony fronts are similarly decorated but severely damaged. Both circles contain central aisles both horizontally and vertically, the horizontal dividing the space to form a gallery behind. Some work appears to be taking place in the area that would have contained the stalls.
