Black and white engraving showing the auditorium of the Islington Scientific and Literary Institute, later known as the Almeida Theatre. The engraving is taken from the rear wall and from a position to stage right. This 'auditorium' is better described as a semicircular lecture theatre: rows of steeply raked bench seating curve around a central position for the speaker; in the front wall - the diameter of the semicircle - two entrances and, beyond an upper level balustrade, the library can be seen; a chandelier is suspended from an oval lighting well in the ceiling.
