Regal

1345

A rectilinear brick building with the south east corner chamfered to form a grand entrance. The brick facades facing the roads to the south and east are articulated with bands of locally quarried stone. An unusual survival is a free-standing street advertisement, comprising an open lattice steel frame surmounted by a four sided vertical sign with the name REGAL. The building is thought to be the best work of its architect Ernest Roberts. It was built to double as a theatre, with generous stage, and four dressing rooms. Certainly, it is a remarkable survival of a cinema theatre of the thirties, retaining original Art Deco features throughout.
