Town Hall

1388

A large theatre, seating c. 1,700, built by the Pontypridd Market and Town Hall Company over a pre-existing fruit and vegetable market. Vacant and closed, the theatre is completely hemmed in by the market buildings and other shops on all sides so that the structure has no obvious front or principal entrance from the shopping street. Access is from Penuel Lane via corrugated iron clad bridges, where the rendered side of the theatre and massive flytower are visible. Slate roof to auditorium with terracotta crested roof ridge tiles. Inside, flat-floored hall with single balcony and slips leading to exits and circular lighting boxes either side of the square proscenium. Raised stage, deep coved ceiling with circular grilles and wavy cornice in the Art Deco style with red tip-up seats to balcony. Plain walls and projection box. Pontypridd Town Hall was on The Theatres Trust's Theatre Buildings at Risk (TBAR) register from 2010 to 2014. Plans to create a charitable group to campaign for the theatre’s redevelopment were announced by the Save Pontypridd Town Hall group in June 2015.
