Globe
Replaced the Theatre in Trafalgar Street. Accommodation: stalls, dress circle, pit, circle gallery and amphitheatre. Gallery removed in 1915, and circle improved. Boxes removed and replaced by two canted alcoves with panelled sides and tops in a pagoda style. Reopened in 1916 as the Theatre Royal Cinema, but was not a success and after a few months closed to reopen as the Globe Theatre. Continued until c.1926.
Local rifle and small arms shooting range set up in auditorium until 1947 when troops were billeted there. In 1956 Vaux Breweries extended the Freemasons Arms next door, underdrawing the circle with a ceiling and removing the stage to create a dance and banquetting room. Above this false ceiling the Globe Theatre remains.
