Shakespeare

171

Sited at the end of a long narrow yard of the Shakespeare Hotel, the theatre closed in 1834 when it was converted into a ballroom. Later the interior was gutted and it became a store.

A simple rectangular building of stone with a pitched roof. Three bay gabled front with a central arched doorway reached by a flight of five steps and flanked by plain sash windows. Single doors similarly flank the steps at basement level. A single square window in the gable above which there is, remarkably, a chimney stack.

Redevelopment at the rear may affect access. In September 1988 a tree fell onto the roof causing damage but repairs were carried out by the local Civic Society and the building is now in use as a church.
