Gaiety Theatre

A sea-side theatre set in a terrace of shops facing the sea. Designed by local architect Allen T Hussell, it opened in May 1910, the theatre set at first floor above shops, cafes and amusements, with entrance to the theatre through one of the shops.

A charming incident in the street, the theatre building still retains its corner turret with weather-vane and decorative windows at first floor level. The theatre closed in 1963 after failing to meet fire safety requirements which would have reduced its capacity. The ground floor remains an amusement arcade and series of shops, but the theatre has since been converted to three flats.
