greenroom

1834

The greenroom started out in 1983 as a peripatetic organisation, using venues across Manchester to present a variety of new and unusual works, supporting emerging and mid-career artists to develop and produce new performance works. In Autumn 1987 it acquired a home under two railway arches on Whitworth Street. The facilities included the performance space - a fully equipped black box theatre seating 166 on a retractable seating unit; the workspace - with sprung dance floor and 40 removable seats, for workshops, rehearsals, meetings and small performances; and the open space - a two level area providing front of house/bar facilities, and hosting live music events, dj nights and more. In 2011, following news that they were not to be part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio in 2012/13, the venue closed. In 2012 the building became Gorilla, a bar, kitchen, live venue and club.
