Gladstone Theatre
Situated in the Garden Village founded in 1888 by William Hesketh Lever to house his soap factory workers, the Gladstone Hall was first an assembly and recreation hall, with a platform stage for entertainments. Half-timbered over a red brick ground floor with tiled roofs and tile-hanging. Fine Art Nouveau panel over doors, commemorating opening of the room by W E Gladstone.
The auditorium, slightly raked at the rear, has a curved barrel ceiling divided by series of arched, bolted trusses with tie rods. The proscenium stage seen today was introduced in the 1920s. This curves slightly at the top with simple gilded plaster ornaments above and on each side, the latter picked out in gold in an otherwise black-painted interior.
