New Brewery Arts

1909

Part of a multi-media arts centre in an attractive Cotswold town. The town centre brewery comprised several stone buildings, derelict for some years until gutted and converted in 1984. The performance space was formerly the barrel store, although few original features remain, with the exception of the exposed roof trusses. First used as a lecture theatre, it changed use to become a theatre "nearly in the round". The fourth side is a wall on which appropriate backdrops can be hung but scenery plays little part. Galleries have been created on three sides of the performance space, extending on one side to a circulation area and office space. The theatre was only used sporadically, probably due to limitations relating to the design of the auditorium, and in 2014 was subject to a planning application for change of use to a Youth Hostel.
