Southport Theatre

1917

The Southport Theatre forms part of the Floral Hall complex and is closely integrated with the 1930 hall (see Floral Hall). The theatre, added in 1973, serves as a theatre, concert hall and conference centre. Built adjacent to the Floral Hall (they share box office an foyer) it lies lengthways to the Promenade with the fly tower at the West end. Stone with a darker brick relief, the horizontally-stepped roof contrasts with the flat Floral Hall.

The auditorium is a wide room with a flat, unadorned ceiling; the raked seating is in two fan-shaped segments with substantially better sightlines from the rear segment. The stage is flat with proscenium and the option of a forestage or orchestra pit; good stage facilities although the grid is only 9.2m high. Touring house, also used successfully as a cinema.
