Grand Theatre

2014

The Grand Theatre was built in 1888, designed by T Bell. It had an imposing and unusual façade, mixed Gothic and classical. It was stone-faced of three storeys and seven bays, divided by pilaster strips, all under one big pedimented gable. Closely spaced mullioned and transomed first floor windows with cusped heads and a continuous series of small rectangular windows below the pediment. In 1923 the dress circle and gallery of the old auditorium were removed and replaced by one large balcony. By 1934 it had cinema use (with some live performances), and it continued as a cinema until 2000, when it was destroyed by fire. The building was subsequently demolished, and the site today is home to Pendle Borough Council.
