Palace

23

Little known at present of external appearance. Built on a prominent site with streets on three sides but surrounded by shops with pit and gallery entrances, various exits and stage get-in between units. Main entrance on splayed corner of Ward’s End and Southgate with minimal foyer (‘crush room’) serving stalls and circle.

Auditorium probably had two balconies but no views seem to confirm this. Triplet of boxes at dress circle level, centre box with pediment, painted panels above; basket-arched proscenium.
