Garrick Playhouse
The Garrick Society was formed in 1913, and fund-raising was launched in 1930 by Dame Sybil Thorndike for a theatre for the repertory company. It opened in 1932 and presents a modest domestic appearance of brick with pitched slate roof. The main double entrance doors are approached by a few steps, with cinematic style canopy, and lead to a plain entrance foyer with box office. The auditorium is plain and the stage a modest proscenium with apron. Other facilities are dressing rooms, band room and green room and two rehearsal rooms, one in a temporary building at the rear. The Garrick Society allow South Trafford College Drama Department to use the building.
With the aid of Lottery funding, work has begun to alter the appearance of the façade to present a more imposing presence. The front-of-house will be enhanced by increasing the height and designing a white sculptured ceiling. The auditorium will be raked, and bar facilities made more inviting. Stage, backstage and orchestral facilities are being upgraded.
