Her Majesty's
Replaced an earlier Theatre Royal, also of 1864, at the rear of the Strand, Albert Street, behind the Royal Hotel, which suffered collapse after a storm. The theatre was rebuilt within its shell in 1868, when accommodation was pit, gallery, boxes and private boxes. It was refurbished in 1894 and was said to be " a masterpiece of delicate plasterwork". It was the first theatre in the town to introduce animated pictures. After some time hosting music hall and concert parties, the theatre became a repertory theatre in the 1940s, and later a repertory and variety theatre until 1955 when it closed. It reopened in 1957 and continued until 1972. By this time the building was in a dire state of repair, and it was sold to a builder for demolition.
