Central Studio
The Central Studio is one of a series of College buildings which straggle over a large partly-wooded campus, but one which stands out architecturally. The studio was built in 1976, and is the core of a series of facilities, most of which were added in 1999, though it is itself unaltered. Seen now, the studio is approached through an open-plan glass-fronted foyer with bar, the doors protected under a long canopy supported by pillars. To the right hand side is a white-clad rounded block, taller by a clerestory; it carries the logo and legend CENTRAL STUDIO. Around the studio are four music rooms, a recording studio and a dance studio all leading off a curving corridor. The studio has seating for up to 135 on retractable seating on three sides, with three entrances. The performance area backs onto the rear wall in front of which is some flying height: this arrangement allows for any stage configuration for performance. The workshop/loading area at O.P. side allows for easy access.
