Cwmaman Institute
Original domestic-looking stucco front with slated roof; three storeys, four unequal bays. New build behind, officially opened in 2001. Although the Institute itself was in good financial order, they could not afford to repair the old Institute building, and it was decided to redevelop the site. The library is said to be the only non-council library in South Wales.
The theatre/cinema seats 300, with two permanent wheelchair spaces. Stage is flat, with a pros arch and flying facilities. An apron can be built in front of the pros, or the floor removed to reveal an orchestra pit. Get-in is at the side, from the car park area. All areas (except grid?) are fully accessible. Flat fronted balcony, with LX and cinema projection from the box behind.
Before it closed in October 2015, the institue was mostly used for cinema but available for touring stage companies, local amateurs, children’s choir, etc. The Institute was also used for weddings, conferences, etc. Large rehearsal room (divisible) at first floor; lounge bar (also divisible), with small ‘live music spot’ for folk nights, etc; concert hall with simple stage and dance floor on third floor - sound-separated from the main auditorium.
