The Civic Hall

3010

Stourport Civic Centre was constructed in 1964-5 to house the Council Chamber, offices and the public hall, at a cost of £198,810. Located slightly outside of the city centre, overlooking the river Severn, the exterior was of golden-brown brick, brown York stone and silver anodised aluminium. In 2010 Wyre Forest District Council announced its intention to dispose of the Civic Centre. Following the Council’s announcement in February 2011 that the Civic Hall would close, volunteers formed "The Civic Group" in June 2011 and were successful in securing community ownership of the Hall through Community Asset Transfer in September 2013. Ownership of the Civic Hall was formally transferred to Stourport Town Council in April 2014 and The Civic Group will run the venue. The Civic Group has developed a programme of events and activities which includes music, comedy and cabaret as well as professional and amateur theatre. The Civic Hall has a stage with proscenium arch and offers unraked theatre style seating or retractable raked seating for 400, or can be used as a flat floored hall for dancing or other events. Refurbishment of the foyer and facilities was completed in 2014 by the original contractor, Thomas Vale Construction.
