QEH Theatre
The theatre was built for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital School’s drama department, but also hosts visiting productions.
This is a particularly successful use of a difficult and sloping site bounded on the one side by a Georgian terrace and, on the other, neo-Elizabethan school buildings. This new construction has an exterior which is horizontally banded with yellow and brown bricks linked to a glazed drum which lies behind mature trees and a castellated gateway with mock portcullis. The interior has foyers and stairs which link the ground level with the higher school buildings which are within the drum. The auditorium is an irregular octagon with 250 fixed seats and an open thrust stage.
