Tilting Yard Arundel Castle
The Tilting Yard in the grounds of Arundel Castle was man-made during the thirteenth century which time and weather have made into a natural beauty. Surrounded by a thirteenth century wall and grassed, it is used as an open-air theatre for the Arundel Festival when a stage 40ft x 28ft is erected and 1,200 wooden tiered seats are introduced in a fan-shaped arrangement. It has a brilliant natural acoustic. Dressing rooms etc are under canvas, and lighting is variously rigged as required. The Festival attracts an audience from all over the country.
