New End Theatre

3138

The theatre was converted in 1974 from the mortuary of the New End Hospital. Rendered building of domestic appearance with steeply-pitched roof; advanced central entrance porch with pediment. The auditorium is flat-floored with retractable seating and end stage. Originally single-storey, a mezzanine floor was introduced over the auditorium in 1986 to house a theatre bar and offices, for which windows were inserted in the roof. At the same time the auditorium was reseated taking the capacity to 120, and a new stage was built. The theatre attracts actors and directors of international fame and new writing is featured in the repertoire. The New End Theatre closed in August 2011 and was converted into a Jewish arts centre and synagogue for Hampstead's The Village Shul.
