Luton Library Theatre

3152

Opened in 1962 as St. Georges Theatre, a lecture theatre. Part of the large Luton Central Library complex in St. Georges Square, typical in design of a 1960s concrete municipal building, the theatre is situated on the third floor. The box office area is in the library reception area at ground floor level and stairs lead up to the various floors. The auditorium is plain with slightly raked seating and a wooden dado typical of a lecture theatre. The thetare is well patronised and is used by a number of amateur companies, as well as for films. There are four dressing rooms. Originally funded by the local authority which managed the Library and Arts services, this responsibility was devolved in 2008 to the newly formed Luton Cultural Services Trust, which also manages Luton’s Arts Centre, The Hat Factory. In 2009 the Library closed for a major refurbishment and improvements were made to the front of house and bar areas including a new cafe.
