The Midlands Arts Centre opened in 1964 on the site of a 19th century bathing pool in Birmingham’s Cannon Hill Park. The buildings on the 8.6 acre site, including studios and two small theatres, were grouped around a central elliptical court recalling the elliptical plan of the bathing pool. Over the years the buildings fell into disrepair and required significant alterations. The decision was taken to join the existing buildings with a new three storey central linking structure running the full width of the complex. The £15.2m redevelopment between 2008 and 2010 also improved mac’s immediate environment with a new bridge link serving the new entrance and reception, the planting of 200 trees and the opening up a new outdoor terrace to give direct access to the park. Glass curtain walling is used on the ground and first floors to maximise natural daylight in the foyer and cafe. The new building includes a purpose-designed galley, a completely new visual arts education suite and a dedicated audio and visual media studio. The existing visual arts, crafts and performing arts studios were refurbished along with the Theatre and Hexagon Theatre. The theatre has a flat stage at the same level as the stalls, and can seat 219 on retractable seating. The Hexagon was originally a puppetry theatre, with a ‘D’ shaped stage with no wings, surrounded by a curve of three rows of tired seating. In addition, a completely new performing arts studio, The Foyle Studio, now provides a rehearsal venue which is also equipped for theatre and dance performances.
