Pier Pavilion
The original pier was modelled on Brighton’s West Pier but, unlike Brighton, it had its handsome oriental-style pavilion at the seaward end. It was capable of seating 2000.
Destroyed by fire in July 1917, it was replaced in 1922 by a much less elaborate structure, known locally as ‘the aircraft hangar’. During the 1960s/1970s it was used for rock concerts and is now (2004) a nightclub.
