Corwen Pavilion
Built in 1911, it was one of the largest flat-floored public halls in North Wales and hosted the Urdd Eisteddfod in 1929. A two storey gabled ended structure bordered by a single storey lean-to, all clad in corrugated painted metal. Internally, flat dance floor, exposed metal roof trusses and curtained platform at one end. No flytower and limited stage facilities. Not a theatre in the strictest sense, it provided the local community with a venue for music, festivals and other community uses. The Pavilion closed in March 2010 because of health and safety issues, including leaks to the roof, and the presence of asbestos. Repairs were estimated at a cost of £1.3 million. Denbighshire County Council and the Corwen Pavilion Board of Trustees supported a recommendation to demolish the Pavilion on the basis that the property was beyond economic repair. It was also agreed that a new Charitable Trust would be established and the pavilion land would be transferred to this new organisation. Local campaigners 'Save the Pavilion' raised £70,000 towards restoring and repairing the Pavilion. Demolition was due in April 2011, but delayed by court injunction to give the campaign group time to come up with a viable financial plan for the building. The trial regarding the court injunction against demolition was due in December 2011, but delayed due to lack of consent from the Charity Commission. In 2013 the Charity Commission concluded that it would not interfere with any decision by Denbighshire Council as to whether to maintain the Pavilion if it concluded that it was beyond economic repair. In September 2014, the injunction against the Council which prevented demolition of the building was lifted, and work to demolish the building began on 05 January 2015. Denbighshire County Council intends to make the site safe and help set up the newly constituted Trust that would then have access to possible funding and grants which would enable a new Pavilion to be built and the charitable purposes to commence once again.
