Gaiety

Given the local history of extreme antipathy to the theatre from both the Church and the magistrates, Phipps was a wise choice as architect.

The external treatment is, if anything, more restrained than that of the Council offices, nearly opposite. At ground level a restaurant was incorporated to the left of the inconspicuous main entrance, and an arcade (still open) to the right.

The theatre became a cinema in 1932 and was converted into a multi-screen in 1972 which completely obliterated the original interior, but there is an excellent painting of the auditorium in the local museum.
