Union Chapel
The first Union Chapel on the site was built in 1806. The congregation developed a strong musical tradition, the chapel was extended several times, and a school built to the rear of the chapel in 1837. This chapel was demolished in 1875 to make way for a new, larger chapel. The 1877 Union Chapel was designed by James Cubitt, one of the foremost Congregational architects of the nineteenth century. The upper stages of its tower were completed in 1889.
The building was seriously threatened with demolition in the 1980s, but in 1991 the Union Chapel Project was founded, and since that time the chapel has seen increasing use as a performing arts venue.
