Theatre Peckham
Theatre Peckham, founded in 1985, moved to its first theatre on Havil Street in 1991. This was a single story building adjacent to the Town Hall, constructed in brick with a pitched roof featuring dormer windows with green frames and rakes. The majority of the building was taken up with the auditorium and stage. There were some backstage rooms, a box office, staff rooms and a basement under the stage. In 2014 Theatre Peckham temporarily relocated to the second floor of Peckham library whilst the Havil Street site was redeveloped. The new development by Alumno Developments includes artists’ studios, a café gallery and student accommodation. Alumno met the entire £2.47m costs of building the new theatre as part of a Section 106 planning gain agreement with Southwark Council. The theatre is contained in a folded extension clad with iridescent tiles, a design based on the theatre curtain, gathered at the head with hanging pleats. As well as the 200 seat theatre there are two studios and office space. There is also a large, glazed multi-functional foyer which is accessible from a public square at the rear of the building. The new theatre opened in 2016. Theatre Peckham offers arts education and training to children and young people residing in and around the borough of Southwark.
