RAF Cinema
The former cinema was built in 1928 and is the most impressive of the buildings constructed at RAF Uxbridge inter-War. It was designed by the Royal Engineer Lieutenant J. G. N. Clift for the Air Ministry’s Directorate of Works as a two-storey structure consisting of an auditorium with a stage and proscenium arch, retiring rooms and a projection room. It is brick built, externally large sections are cement rendered and painted white. The side elevations feature large stepped brick buttresses. The roof is Welsh slate. The building reflects the importance placed by the military on providing recreation and cultural facilities for recruits, providing a space for films, concerts and theatre. The building was converted into a gymnasium in the 1960s and with the closure of the RAF base, it became vacant. The building was statutory listed Grade II in 2008.
