The Workshop

3851

The Workshop was founded in 1985 and became a registered charity in 1988. In 1993, the McVities/United Biscuits Trust purchased a building to create a theatre seating 72 for The Workshop’s sole use. The building’s ownership was subsequently transferred to the Community Foundation for Calderdale. An arson attack in 2001 resulted in the loss of this building and development of the current theatre in 2004. Based in a Grade II Georgian townhouse in Halifax town centre, The Workshop contains a flat floored black box cabaret style theatre seating 95. The Workshop is an important community hub, teaching acting, dance and theatre skills to young people between the ages of 12–19 throughout the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire and staging Three adult and four youth theatre productions annually. The theatre, auditorium and back stage areas are located on the second floor of the building, with the entrance, front of house areas, bar and rehearsal studio on the ground floor. Storage for props and costumes are in the cellar and the roof space respectively.
