The Avenue Theatre

3865

The Avenue Theatre was constructed in the grounds of the Tudor Grade II* listed Gippeswyck Hall in Ipswich as a home for the Red Rose Chain theatre company. It was designed by Nicholas Jacob Architects in collaboration with Charles Curry Hyde LLP and built by Elliston, Steady and Hawes. The new building replaced a 1960s annexe to the rear of the Hall. Its design was inspired by the type of traditional barns which may have once stood on the site. Externally the theatre is clad with vertical timber panels and has a clay tile roof. A glazed link at ground floor level connects the theatre to the Hall and houses the foyer space. The theatre space is flexible, with capacity for up to 120 people. There is also a cafe/bar and a small courtyard. The theatre opened in February 2015.
