Corn Exchange

433

The Corn Exchange opened 4 June 1862 and was converted in 1993 as arts centre. A restrained stone pilastered Italianate facade in three bays with giant pilasters. It was used as a Corn Exchange until 1983, and various other occasional activities such as wool market, auction house and very occasional non-denominational services and celebrations of Royal occasions. From the 1980s use dwindled and work started in 1992 to transform it into a balconied auditorium, stadium and two meeting rooms. There are dressing rooms, showers, laundry and green room. Double doors at the stage end for loading/unloading, also equipment for doubling as a cinema.
