Designed as a temporary structure for seasonal theatre, the building opened as the Victoria Palace in July 1894. The building and the contained auditorium were approximately square. The centre square section of the auditorium was flat, and on three sides of it were steeply raked areas, each sloping down toward the centre. There were four large cast-iron pillars supporting the roof and these caused considerable disruption of sight-lines. There were no balconies. The theatre closed in 1994 and remained derelict until it was demolished in 2005.
