Pavilion Theatre

661

The original building was a fine example of an Edwardian multi-purpose concert hall of wrought iron and wood with lavishly decorated interior. There was a single promenade balcony, with three boxes each side and delicate plasterwork on boxes, proscenium arch and ceiling. The Pavilion also had elegant tea rooms and a skating rink. This building closed about 1938 and throughout World War II. Reopened subsequently but destroyed by fire in 1954.

The new complex, built in 1960, is typical of its date. It comprises theatre, Ocean Room, meeting rooms and bars. The theatre itself is occasionally used for exhibitions etc.
